"Paint the Plows" Program Displays Lutheran High Artwork
This fall, Lutheran High School of Sioux Falls participated in the ninth annual “Paint the Plows” program held by the City of Sioux Falls. “Paint the Plows” is open to elementary, middle, junior high, and high schools within Sioux Falls. The Sioux Falls Street Division primes the plows, and then participating schools and organizations supply their own paint to create masterpieces on the snow plow blades.
Lutheran High has taken part in this program for a number of years. This year, Lutheran High’s plow design was created by senior Alisha Hamkens. Each year, Mrs. Pam Ellis, the art teacher at LHSSF, has students from each of her art classes submit design ideas for the plow at the beginning of the school year. The student body then has the chance to vote on which design they like the best.
Alisha Hamkens found a bible verse that she liked (Mathew 17:20) and based her design around the verse. The verse states: “He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” With the verse in mind, she created a background of sunset colors and gray mountains with the phrase “Faith Can Move Mountains” painted across the scene.
Hamkens was surprised and excited when her design was chosen, especially since it was her first time submitting a design for the project. Art students then worked on the plow design for about two weeks, and Hamkens was placed in charge of the painting process to make sure everything looked the way she wanted it to look.
Hamkens enjoys art. “One of my favorite things about art is I can create whatever I want," she says. "There are no limits or rules to art.”
And what has she learned as an artist at Lutheran High? “Sometimes the mistakes you make are what makes a piece unique, and it can make a piece better.”
With the snow steadily coming down in the city of Sioux Falls, be on the lookout for the Lutheran High plow helping clear the snowy streets during this cold winter season!
